Appearing with Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC on Thursday, Senator Bernie Sanders spoke about the Pope's visit to America and his comments on poverty, claiming that the Catholic leader's views are as, if not more, radical than his own in terms of poverty, social justice, and outright socialism.

First, Sanders and Mitchell both praise the Pope for his inclusion of Dorothy Day as one of his heroes, with Sanders canonizing her socialism.

"The fact that he mentioned her as one of the four examples of people that he admired was rather extraordinary unto itself," said Sanders. "She was a socialist."

"The fact that the Pope signaled her as one of the leaders he admired tells us what his view is in terms of what we should be doing around the world, in terms of income and wealth inequality, and poverty AND the need to fight for justice."

Sanders then goes on to state clearly how the Pope's various comments on poverty and wealth, and particularly in his speech to congress, reflect his own views.

"This is a brilliant man, I mean. You know, I know that people think that Bernie Sanders is a radical ... read what the pope is writing about. Because he is not only talking about poverty and income and wealth inequality, he is getting to the heart of hyper capitalism. And he is saying, 'why as a society are we worshiping money'? We're making money the golden idol, respecting and admiring people who have billions of dollars at the same time as we are ignoring people who are sleeping out on the streets, people who are going hungry, people who have no healthcare. And he is saying that is not the way we should be living our lives. That is a pretty profound critique of modern society."

Pope Francis has faced much criticism from the American right for his perceived leftism, as well as praise from the left for the same. Today his speech managed to garner him the title of social justice "radical" and a hearty amen from Bernie Sanders himself. Historic indeed.
