On Tuesday, Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) took to the Senate floor urging her Democratic colleagues to vote against approving the Keystone XL pipeline, calling it an environmental hazard.

“What does XL stand for? To me it stands for extra lethal, not extra large, but extra lethal,” Boxer said. “This is a serious environmental hazard.”

“Why do we want to bring barrels of filthy, dirty, dangerous pollution into America," she continued. "Keystone tar sands pipeline will be harmful to our health, it will hurt the environment, it will worsen the impacts of climate change, it will raise the price of gas, and it's just plain dangerous."

The Keystone XL pipeline would bring oil from Canada down through the United States to Gulf Coast refineries. Supporters of the pipeline argue it will create jobs, while opponents subscribe to Senator Boxer's line of thinking.

The Senate will vote on Keystone XL Tuesday night. According to The Hill, the Senate appears one vote short of the 60 votes required for approval.
