On Wednesday, Vice President Joe Biden released a statement in reaction to the horrific crash of a speeding Amtrak train that, so far, has claimed the lives of seven people. He expressed gratefulness for the rail system, claiming it as "a second family."

Biden earned the nickname "Amtrak Joe" after using the transportation system during his Senate career traveling between Wilmington, Delaware and Washington, D.C. As NBC News points out, the vice president considers Amtrak "an absolute national treasure and necessity." He was also honored in 2011 having his hometown station renamed the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. Railroad Station.

In Biden's statement, he expressed deep sadness over the tragedy, thanked the first responders, and offered prayers to the victims and their families. He continued:

The victims could have been any one of our parents, children, or someone from one of our communities. Amtrak is like a second family to me, as it is for so many other passengers. For my entire career, I’ve made the trip from Wilmington to Washington and back. I’ve come to know the conductors, engineers, and other regulars - men and women riding home to kiss their kids goodnight - as we passed the flickering lights of each neighborhood along the way.

Inevitably, the tragic moment will be used by politicians, and the media alike, to call for more government spending to "fix" the problem.
