White House Using Behavioral Science to 'Nudge' Government Compliance

"Just like the pied piper led rats through the streets…"

President Obama is using science to manipulate the American people into doing his bidding.

Sounds a little too conspiratorial? Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Consider that in 2014 the White House group launched the Social and Behavioral Sciences Team. This group, along with the department of Health and Human Services, determined that Obamacare applicants were more likely to complete their registration if they received a personalized reminder with a photo of the sender included. In essence, this more personal letter "nudged" them to complete their signup.

And it worked. Enrollment in Obamacare was boosted 13.2 percent, compared to only 1.8 percent for those that received a letter with no personalization.

This research was so compelling to the administration, that Obama issued an executive order in the middle of September that called on all departments to find ways to spur behavioral changes in the public.

And it wasn't just healthcare that was a part of the larger experiment, but also the administration's green agenda. The behavioral science team found that when government employees were prompted on-screen to change their default print settings from one- to double-sided printing, 5.8 percent of them did.

Obama has used similar tactics previously during his political career, asking for advice on how to portray Mitt Romney in the 2012 elections and even how to quiet the accusations that he is a Muslim.

The president's senior advisor on science and technology issues John Holdren once said, "The social and behavioral sciences are real science -- with immensely valuable, real, practical applications -- the views of a few members of Congress to the contrary notwithstanding."

Those "withstanding" in Congress have been involved in passing several House bills that cut funding for this type of "soft" science. Yet the president obviously finds the science to be very effective -- and is not afraid to use it to his advantage.
