Unrepentant Reid: 'Of Course' Romney Paid His Taxes

"Oh, I have no repentance. Because it was an issue that was important."

In an interview with Univision's Jorge Ramos published Tuesday, semi-retired Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid openly admitted he deliberately lied to the American people in 2012 about Mitt Romney's taxes. Saying "of course" Romney paid his taxes, Reid told a Ramos that he nonetheless had "no repentance" for his bald-faced lie about the Republican presidential candidate.

Reid's fib has resurfaced after he said in a recent interview with CNN's Dana Bash that he had "no regrets" about his "McCarthyite" comments from the Senate floor about Romney paying his taxes because, well, "Romney didn't win, did he?" In his interview with the outgoing Democrat Senate leader, Ramos pressed him on the flagrant deception:

RAMOS: August 2012, you said on the Senate floor that Mitt Romney had not paid taxes in ten years.

REID ON SENATE FLOOR IN 2012: The word’s out that he hasn’t paid any taxes for ten years. Let him prove that he has paid taxes... Because he hasn’t.

RAMOS: But there was no evidence of that. Did you purposely lie?

Though he said he was "happy to respond" the question, Reid dodged it by repeating his fallback argument that he was simply calling for Romney to release his tax returns.

REID: I’m really happy to respond to this because it’s been blown way out of proportion. Mitt Romney during the time he was running for president, refused to give us his tax returns. […] He’ll say, "I always paid taxes." He refused to show the American people his tax returns.

When Ramos defended Romney, citing an interview with CBS in which he said he stated that he'd faithfully paid "a lot" of taxes, Reid responded by openly admitting that he knew that to be true:

RAMOS: He told CBS, "Let me also say… I have paid taxes every year. A lot of taxes."

REID: But that’s a phony answer! Of course he paid taxes. What he didn’t do is let us see his tax returns.

To keep up the charade, Reid then called yet again for Romney to release his taxes.

REID: Mitt Romney, he can still take care of this issue. Let us see his tax returns! He has never done that.

Citing the Bash interview, Ramos highlighted that Reid had essentially announced that he had lied and was "unrepentant" for having done so:

RAMOS: But in a recent interview, you seemed to justify a possible fabrication when you said "Romney didn’t win, did he?" You sounded unrepentant, as if…

REID: Oh, I have no repentance. Because it was an issue that was important.

RAMOS: But it was clear there was no evidence.

REID: Listen, there is easy way to settle this. Let him give us his tax returns.

The president is apparently "unrepentant" about Reid's fabrication too. When pressed by Fox News' James Rosen if President Obama would condemn Reid's lie on the Senate floor, White House Spokesman Josh Earnest refused. "Not for something that's three years old," said Earnest.

During the interview with Ramos, Reid also revealed that after eleven hours of surgery, he still cannot see out of his right eye.
