During a visit to Washington, D.C. over the weekend, a group of high school friends from Union City, Pennsylvania, decided to visit the historically black college Howard University and have lunch. But two of the girls were wearing “Make America Great Again” hats and that didn’t go over too well among the college students.
On Twitter, Allie Vandee described being cursed at and harassed after she and a friend, Sara, entered the cafeteria with their hats on and before one of them was snatched off of Sara’s head:
Vandee, 16, said the group was only on campus for no more than 20 minutes and encountered “countless students” taking pictures of them and mocking them. One issued a threat on social media:
Howard University responded in a series of ten tweets in defense of its students who “represent all that is right about America:”
Howard U’s dining hall only sent out just one tweet in response to the high school visitors and assured that they will do whatever it takes to make sure the older, more mature college students aren’t bothered in their safe spaces by opposing viewpoints:
Vandee was confronted about her visit by a Black Lives Matter supporter known on Twitter as the “Black Lorena Bobbitt,” who asked, “You came to an HBCU, one of the few places Black people have historically been relatively safe from racism, and openly supported a racist. What did you expect?”
“I expected to get my damn lunch without being harassed,” Vandee said.
