On the campaign trail, Donald Trump wasn't conning anyone when he vowed to build a border wall. On Wednesday, he signed an Executive Order to do just that.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, President Trump vowed to build the border wall in protection of U.S. sovereignty.
"A nation without borders is not a nation," Trump said. "Beginning today, the United States of America gets back control of its borders, gets back its borders."
Trump also addressed an audience of DHS employees, vowing his administration will let them perform their jobs.
"This is a law enforcement agency," he said. "But for too long your offices and agents haven’t been allowed to properly do your jobs."
The heart of the problem, which Trump's actions seek to fix, has less to do with current immigration laws on the books than the fact that no one has been enforcing them. He spoke about enforcing the current laws without seeking to pass new ones, allowing for effective immigration control without running to Congress. He also addressed families victimized by illegal immigrant crime.
"To all of those hurting out there, I repeat to you these words. We hear you, we see you and you will never, ever be ignored again," he said. "When it comes to public safety, there is no place for politics; no Republicans, no Democrats, just citizens."
Shortly thereafter, Vice President Mike Pence swore Gen. John Kelly as the Department of Homeland Security Secretary.
