GOP candidate Donald Trump has accepted Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's endorsement as of Friday afternoon.
In a press release, Trump commended Sen. Cruz for his endorsement, expressing that he felt "greatly honored" to receive it.
"I am greatly honored by the endorsement of Senator Cruz. We have fought the battle and he was a tough and brilliant opponent," Trump said. “I look forward to working with him for many years to come in order to make America great again."
Given the past conflict between Trump and Cruz during the primary, the Texas senator's endorsement has been seen as the first step towards unity of a party that appeared steadfastly divided at this year's RNC, and may be the needed gesture to calm objections from the #NeverTrump crowd.
"After many months of careful consideration, of prayer and searching my own conscience, I have decided that on Election Day, I will vote for the Republican nominee, Donald Trump," Cruz wrote on Facebook.
"I’ve made this decision for two reasons," he continued. "First, last year, I promised to support the Republican nominee. And I intend to keep my word. Second, even though I have had areas of significant disagreement with our nominee, by any measure Hillary Clinton is wholly unacceptable — that’s why I have always been #NeverHillary."
To maintain good will, the Trump campaign has included Cruz's friend Sen. Mike Lee as one of his potential SCOTUS picks. Could Sen. Ted Cruz potentially receive a cabinet position in the Trump administration over this endorsement? That remains to be seen.
