In the wake of Jon Stewart announcing his exit from The Daily Show, leftists from Salon to Slate have been frantically scrambling to find who will be their new prophet of irreverent discourse. A new poll indicates they have set their Messianic sights on former SNL star Tina Fey.
With 19 percent of American voters favoring Fey's replacement of Stewart, the Quinnipiac University National Poll places her just three percentage points above another SNL alumni (and notable conservative) Dennis Miller, at 16 percent. Both comedians had previously served host to SNL's Weekend Update, the original inspiration for fake news shows like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Trailing Fey and Miller were notable comedians Chelsea Handler, John Oliver, Craig Ferguson, and, strangely, Brian Williams; all were in the single digits.
The chances of Tina Fey taking the helm at The Daily Show are extremely slim, especially following the release of her new wildly popular Netflix series The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which she produced. She also has given no indication of any desire to bear Jon Stewart's torch.
During the 2008 presidential election, Tina Fey became as much of a political sensation as a comedic one with her satirical impressions of Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, where she falsely framed the former governor of Alaska in one sketch as saying, "I can see Russia from my house."
