Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan says that while he may not agree with Donald Trump on everything, it is a good thing that Trump is in the race to be president because it is "f***ing up" the political class.
During a Q & A before a concert in August, Corgan was asked his thoughts about the August 6th Republican debate and whether he had watched it. Corgan said he had watched a recording of the debate after his own show that night:
"I think what’s cool is Trump’s running chaos theory," Corgan said. "He’s forcing a lot of things out into the open, so they can’t control this, whatever that control is."
"It’s like the music business: everybody gets controlled, and somebody comes along that f***s it all up," Corgan explained. "I think it’s good that he’s f***ing it up, because whether or not he’s the guy, obviously the political class doesn’t want him there. It’ll open it up to a bigger dialogue."
Corgan compared politics to rock'n'roll, saying that when it gets boring it needs to be shaken up:
"Whether anybody agrees or not, the rating on that debate was 24 million. It was eight times higher than the first Republican debate of the last cycle. It was the highest non-sports related cable rating of all time. That means people are engaged," Corgan said.
Asked if that only meant politics was becoming like entertainment, Corgan responded that he doesn't see a big difference:
"I would argue, at this point, is there any difference between politics and entertainment?" he added.
The singer went on to say that while he is an "animal rights guy," he was saddened to see the world react the way it did to the death of Cecil the Lion while remaining relatively quiet about the death of children around the world every day.
