As we’ve seen over the past few months, GOP members holding town halls across the country have been met with vehement anger from constituents. But as one freshman congressman found out, that anger has turned into credible threats.
Rep. Tom Garrett (R-VA) held a town hall meeting on Tuesday night. Though typical for these events to have an escape plan for the representative if the protests get out of hand, Garrett’s town hall was “lined with security,” Politico reports, guarding all entrances and exits and up and down the aisles of the 300-seat room.
The heightened security was a result of the Capitol Police, state police, and other intelligence officials stating threats against Garrett, his wife, family, and even his dog, were “credible and real.”
As a military veteran, Garrett said he could handle the threats against his life.
“I reconciled myself with the reality that one day I'm not going to be here," he said. “I don't want to die anytime soon. I got stuff left to do, I hope. But when you pull wives and children in, that's not cool."
“It’s nuts,” Garrett added.
The House Freedom Caucus member assumed he was a target as a supporter of the American Health Care Act which is the source of much of the tension across America. But while he invites disagreement, violence is out of the question.
"I don't have any problem with anybody who reaches a different policy conclusion based on the information they amalgamate and process," Garrett said. "That dissent is American — praise God, we need that. That's what made us who we are."
"But when it's, 'I'm going to kill you this way. Then, 'I'm going to kill your wife. This is what I'm going to do to your daughters’ — Then you get a circumstance where there's an awful lot of security."
Thankfully, the town hall finished without too many problems. Politico notes that hecklers were checked throughout the night and only one woman had to be removed for multiple disruptions.
