Ret. Col.: Veteran Neglect 'No Surprise, Going on For Years'

"Veteran's Affairs has been having issues for a long, long time."

Col. Tom Manion, USMC (Ret.), spoke to guest host Major Garrett on CBS's Face the Nation Sunday, saying the neglect of American veterans is nothing new and has been a problem for years.

Well, Major, for me on this Memorial Day weekend, when we think about those guys that are coming home and for them not to have the type of service and attention they need is really unacceptable. But it's also something that is no surprise -- it has been going on for years. And really, there's too much bureaucracy, there's too much red tape and we really just got to get past that and deliver the services that are needed for these guys. They've done so much for this country and we owe them just that.

Manion said the country ought to be able to figure out exactly how to improve care for veterans but said, "Veteran's Affairs has been having issues for a long, long time."

Col. Manion has a new book titled "Brother's Forever" about his son and his son's best friend who were killed in action and are now buried next to each other at Arlington National Cemetery.
