Progressive L.A. Declares Emergency on Homelessness

Throwing in $100 million more to "help."

Los Angeles, the penultimate liberal haven, is home to some of the richest people in America. Hollywood celebrities that never miss a chance to preach social justice, equality, and helping their fellow man, along with progressive politics that fund social program after social program, should make the city nothing less than a veritable utopia. And yet the city's homeless population has gotten so out of hand, the city council declared a state of emergency on homelessness Tuesday.

CNN reports that Mayor Eric Garcetti made the announcement the same day he shared a new plan to end this epidemic, asking for $100 million to get people off the streets for good.

"We all understand the urgency that this situation requires, and what is at stake," Garcetti said. "I applaud the Los Angeles City Council for their action today in earmarking a necessary initial investment that helps launch my comprehensive plan to tackle homelessness."

Garcetti said the reason there are so many more homeless has to do with the lack of affordable housing and emergency shelters. His plan aims to "fast-track" affordable housing into the city, and to make it easier for faith-based organizations to offer shelters and programs. The report notes that the mayor is asking for more than the initial $100 million -- seeking an additionally $100 million annually to combat the growing problem and keep it at bay. He is also asking for an immediate $13 million, through subsidies, in "emergency funding."

"If we can lift up those in need, and pick up those left behind, then we can live up to the best of our ideals," Garcetti said.

Since the two years he has been mayor of Los Angeles, homelessness has increased by 12 percent.
