An owner of a pizzeria in Indiana is hoping to do his part in getting weapons off the streets by offering what is possibly the dumbest trade ever: pizza for guns.

Donald Dancy owns D&C Pizza in Indianapolis and is currently offering customers a free extra large pizza if they turn in their weapons. After the exchange, Dancy says he will keep the guns safe and hand them over to police.

What makes this story even more distressing is the amount of crime that surrounds the pizza shop. Dancy says it’s “like a war zone.”

"I can see kids 14 through 18 coming in here and buying a pizza, and their guns fall out,” he said, believing an offer of a free pie might do the trick. It is an extra large, so that’s worth at least 20 bucks. Seems like a fair trade, right? (Maybe this is a ruse to arm the store for protection. That sounds like a decent plan.)

But Dancy truly believes this program might work: "If a person can turn in a gun, that's one less gun we've got on the streets. That's still one less gun  — that I could save a life." 

Anti-gun outlet Mic.com picked up on the story and were a bit skeptical of the idea. So, they dug deep and sought out the advice of an expert in an attempt to bolster Dancy’s pipe dream.

“There are two forces that can lead young people to give up their guns in exchange for pizza," Ervin Staub explained. "People tend to return kindness directed at them."

Staub is a psychology professor emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, but those credentials didn’t help his ultimate conclusion: 

"While this hopefully will work with some people, it will probably not for many who have varied reasons to keep their guns.”

Mic noted that programs like Dancy's haven’t proved fruitful in the past. Bishop Damon Roach tried to collect guns from the street at his church in Indianapolis. His draw was cold, hard cash — up to $600 per gun. That sounds tempting, but it ended with his church being vandalized and set on fire. 

Even so, there are other businesses and churches in the area that have hinted at doing something similar.
