On Piers Morgan Live Wednesday, Morgan and two panelists, including CNN’s Don Lemon, discussed the fallout from Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson’s controversial comments about homosexual behavior.
Lemon contended that A&E should not fire Robertson; he said rather that people should be allowed to “hang themselves” in the marketplace. Morgan disagreed, insisting that “he should be fired” for his “absolutely repulsive” comments, mentioning that Walmart should strongly consider its “corporate responsible reaction.”
After citing the jaw-dropping numbers for A&E’s far and away most popular shows (14 million viewers weekly, $400 million in merchandise revenues), Morgan turned to Lemon for his opinion on A&E’s actions and Walmart’s need to address their reaction to the firestorm.
Morgan: Final question’s for you, Don. Should he be allowed back? Should he just be fired from the show for this? And what is the corporate responsible reaction from Walmart, who sells so much of Duck Dynasty products?
Lemon: Listen, I always err on the side of free speech. Just because I'm offended, as I say, I think people can say whatever they want to say. I don't think people should be fired. I think the marketplace should decide. If people don't like Duck Dynasty, they shouldn't watch Duck Dynasty... As someone who comes from Louisiana. I grew up there, was born there, in the place where they actually shoot the story. I'm not saying anything people don't know about Louisiana, about the South, and about America. It is a place where many people still feel and think the way he thinks. So, I personally, if you're asking me my personal opinion, I don't think he should be fired. I think people should be allowed to say what they want, and if they hang themselves, they hang themselves.
Morgan: I won't be quite as kind as you. I think he should be fired. I think it’s absolutely repulsive.
