President Obama has long touted that training Syrian rebels to fight ISIS is "the best counterweight" in his administration's promise to degrade and defeat the terror group. And with that promise came $500 million in federal funds for the U.S. military to begin training Syrian fighters. So, what does the president have to show for his investment? Of the original 54 soldiers trained in the first group, only four, maybe five, of those rebels are left fighting ISIS, according to new reports.
Making matters worse, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Christine Wormuth told the Senate Armed Services Committee Wednesday that they have only 100-120 fighters total training in three other groups right now -- to go up against ISIS, who is 30,000 strong, and growing.
Needless to say, though NBC News did, "the U.S. military is conducting a broad review of the training program."
General Lloyd Austin, leader of th U.S. military's Central Command, admitted that the program was a bit behind initial targets, but expects the numbers to grow moving forward.
Meanwhile, thousands from all over the world are heeding the call of ISIS's recruiting efforts and joining rank. Though most come from North Africa and the Middle East, more and more recruits are coming from Western states. Some estimates show that nearly 1,000 fighters are coming from the UK. In America, that number is believed to be only 18, according to NBC. But as WND notes, FBI Director James Corney in July said there are "upwards of 200 Americans" fighting alongside ISIS in Syria.
These new revelations will no doubt add fuel to the fire started by recent allegations in the intelligence community that the Obama administration has been cooking the books to drive the president's "JV team" narrative.
