Obama Threatens Veto of Bill to Bar Federal Funding of Abortions

The Obama White House announced today that it would veto a bill currently circulating in the House of Representatives that would seek to permanently prohibit federal taxpayer funding of abortion.

The Administration strongly opposes legislation that unnecessarily restricts women's reproductive freedoms and consumers' private insurance options.

Since 1976, the Hyde Amendment banning federal funding of abortion has been a part of every federal spending bill, but with Obamacare's unprecedented federal intrusion into the private insurance market, taxpayers are now poised to subsidize abortion on a wide scale for the first time. The current Republican bill seeks to curtail that reversal, but the President pushed back strongly with a statement today.

The legislation would intrude on women's reproductive freedom and access to health care; increase the financial burden on many Americans; unnecessarily restrict the private insurance choices that consumers have today; and restrict the District of Columbia's use of local funds

According to House Majoiry Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA),

The people’s House will stand for life. We will do everything in our power to make sure that our values and the sanctity of life are reflected in the law of the land."
