Earlier this month, MTV's Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word invited on a young man named Jacob Tobia who identifies himself as neither a man nor woman, but "genderqueer," which falls somewhere in between...sort of. 

Though Jacob wears a dress with lipstick and earrings, he has not jettisoned his beard and maintains somewhat of an identifiable male vocal inflection. Simply put, he looks like a man wearing a dress, but looks can be deceiving.  

"I don't really identify as a man or a woman," Jacob told Laverne. "I'm just Jacob, and you know, I'm in a dress with lipstick and a beard, and I just want to be me. I just feel happiest this way."

Asked what his preferred "gender pronouns" were, Jacob replied, "I see gender as a spectrum that we play with, and so I use gender-neutral pronouns: they, them, and theirs. It's just a way to reflect my identity, and when people use the pronouns that I like it makes me feel respected and happy and loved."

Jacob also clarified that he hates when people just see him as a man in a dress.

"People look at me and they think I'm a man in a dress," said Jacob, "and I'm like, 'Honey, I'm not a man,' I don't see myself that way, I don't want to be masculine, I'm just Jacob."

Most of Jacob's family has been supportive of his newfound identity, all except his dad. When Jacob wore a "Jackie Kennedy pink dress" on his graduation weekend, his dad was "the only person on campus who was angry."

The interview concluded with Jacob exclaiming he feels "so good" about himself when he struts down Fifth Avenue wearing high heels and that he hoped for a "transcommunity where we all realize that we're in this together."
