MSNBC’s Chris Hayes has authored a new book to be released on March 21, and based on the initial takes on its content, the message is clear: “don’t buy this book.”

The title is A Colony In A Nation and it “argues that there are really two Americas,” according to the title’s description:

Hayes contends our country has fractured in two: the Colony and the Nation. In the Nation, we venerate the law. In the Colony, we obsess over order, fear trumps civil rights, and aggressive policing resembles occupation. A Colony in a Nation explains how a country founded on justice now looks like something uncomfortably close to a police state. How and why did Americans build a system where conditions in Ferguson and West Baltimore mirror those that sparked the American Revolution?

After seeing a copy of the book, Ryan Cooper from The Week expounded on Hayes's theories which he said also contends that “for a fairly large segment of American society, the United States is not a democracy.” Hayes means “black and brown” people who he argues “live in a sort of internal colony” where their rights aren’t respected and they are “brutally repressed… by a tyrannical state.” Furthermore, President Trump is ushering in a new kind of “state repression,” Cooper adds.

But the most egregious historical analogy is taken way too far — Newsbusters said it goes straight over a cliff “like Thelma and Louise” — when Hayes compares the Ferguson riots and the general resistance by Black Lives Matter to the atmosphere prior to the American Revolution:

Somewhat amusingly, Hayes explains the roots of the protests against police brutality by analogy to the American Revolution, one of the roots of which was nearly identical coercive extraction of taxes and fees to pay back British war debts. Unrest like that does not spring from nowhere; it grows in the seedbed of persecution.

Instead of modulating the thirst for vengeance with a recognition of the need for rehabilitation, they gave in completely to the lizard brain, making sentences savage and prisons hellish....As a result, as Hayes writes, the America criminal justice system now likely rivals the Soviet gulags in terms of the percentage of the population under supervision.

In typical MSNBC fashion, Hayes is all over the place with his frantic "knowledge."

Cooper also claims that Hayes book serves as a warning for “what’s coming for everyone, if we cannot reclaim and rebuild our democratic system for everyone."
