More Winning for Free Speech: DoJ Throws Out Challenge, Washington Redskins Can Keep Name

Some good news for a change.

The legal challenge launched against the NFL’s Washington Redskins to change its name to something less “offensive” to leftists has been tossed in the waste bin by Jeff Session’s Department of Justice. This marks twice this month there’s been a victory for free speech.

Two weeks ago, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Asian-American rock band The Slants in a 8-0 decision that ruled a federal trademark law banning offensive names was unconstitutional. With the unanimous ruling as a backdrop, the Trump administration sent a letter to the Supreme Court arguing that the justices would also rule in favor of the Redskins thus making a trial unnecessary.

President Trump stated back in 2015 that the NFL team shouldn’t change the name unless the owner wanted to, but added, “I know Indians that are extremely proud of that name.”

Just as it did with The Slants, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office deemed the Redskins’ name and logo offensive to Native Americans and refused to renew the trademark. Well, get the renewal papers ready!
