Joseph Gordon-Levitt Becomes Male Feminist Poster Boy

Feminist left worries meddlesome men might "successfully ruin" the movement

Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt has successfully made himself the poster boy of male feminism. After coming out on the Ellen Degeneres Show as a proud male feminist, he’s now produced a video arguing for the importance of feminism. The video also directs viewers to visit his “variety show” site and post their opinions on feminism to help further the conversation.

Feminism, he explains, is not anti-men, a point made repeatedly by Harry Potter’s Emma Watson to the U.N. this weekend.

"To me it just means that your gender doesn't have to define who you are," says Gordon-Levitt. "That you can be whatever you want to be, whoever you want to be, regardless of your gender.”

The actor explains that he was surprised to find that some women do not identify with the word and wanted to help emphasize the fact-based arguments for the need for feminism.

"The facts are pretty contrary to this, if you actually look at the evidence of salaries vs. salaries for men. There's still a definite disparity."

His vocal support of feminism of course is earning him high praise among some circles, though many in the feminist left aren't so thrilled with the role men like Gordon-Levitt are playing in the movement:
