On Tuesday evening, Fusion and Univision anchor and reporter Jorge Ramos was escorted out of a Donald Trump press conference by what appeared to be Trump's security, resulting in a brief media bonanza and social media explosion, with Ramos being the top trending topic on Twitter for hours.
After the press conference, during which Ramos was able to return and ask several questions, Fusion released a video showing Ramos explaining his version of events.
"Mr. Trump said that I couldn't even ask him my question," says Ramos in the short video clip. "And I am a reporter, an immigrant, and a U.S. citizen, and I have the right to ask any question to anyone."
Ramos goes on to describe being escorted out by security, noting that it's the first time he's ever been kicked out of a press conference.
Ramos repeats that it is his right to ask questions, that be believed it was his "right" be the next person to ask a question because other reporters had already asked theirs, although from the video that does not appear to be the case at all. It is certainly a reporter's right and responsibility to ask questions. It is not a reporter's right or responsibility to prevent other reporters from asking their questions though. Whether this disruption required the intervention of security is a separate question.
Ramos repeatedly claims he just wanted to ask a question. But in reality and clearly demonstrated in the videos, even clearly outlined in his own words above, he instead made declarations about what Trump can't do. He gave a speech.
The line between tough questions and just plain old grandstanding may be murky, but in this case it seems Ramos, even by his own description, came down quite clearly on the grandstanding side of that line.
