Hot Mic Picks Up Chuck Todd Joking about John McCain's Health

"McCain must have had heart palpitations."

Awaiting President Obama's remarks at a Thursday press conference on the Iraq crisis, a hot mic picked up MSNBC's Chuck Todd making a wisecrack about Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) heart troubles. Standing near the podium with Todd were Fox News' Ed Henry and CBS's Major Garrett. Todd began by referencing the remarks of Gen. David Petraeus on keeping U.S. military actions off the table in Iraq. McCain believes military action is needed. Todd played on that tension but was unknowingly being recorded. Here is what the mic picked up:

Todd: Did anybody check John McCain? Is he okay now that David Petraeus came out against [unintelligible]? I’ve got to think McCain must have had heart palpitations. Wait, what? David Petraeus said what? Oh…now it'll be, now the Obama administration, they have something on him. [laughs]

Henry: What's funny is that McCain was on our air an hour ago saying we should send Petraeus to Iraq…he said that an hour ago. He gave a speech yesterday saying we can't be the air force of Iraq.

Todd: Right, that's what's amazing. He's like wanting Petraeus to be the guy and Petraeus is saying, we're not taking sides on this...
