Hillary Support Falls Below 50 Percent

Leads over GOP contenders shrink dramatically

Pollster John Zogby presented some troubling numbers for 2016 hopeful Hillary Clinton, finding her support for the key election matchups below 50 percent for the first time and her leads over GOP contenders falling dramatically.

The Washington Examiner reports:

At a time when she should be padding her lead over the top Republican contenders, her underwhelming effort has cut her numbers, said pollster John Zogby.

In his latest Zogby Analytics survey taken June 27-29, for example, her commanding leads over former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie have shrunk greatly, and she doesn't even receive 50 percent of the vote. Worse, her support among married and wealthy voters has plummeted.

While Clinton still maintains leads over key GOP contenders, those leads have fallen off dramatically: Her lead over Bush fell 6 points to 47-35; her lead over Rand Paul now stands at 48-36, down 9 points; and her lead over Chris Christie has fallen 8 points to 48-33.

Zogby explained that Clinton was "losing ground" not only due to the bungled book tour but because of her longtime "nemesis," the “inevitability factor,” which derailed her 2008 run:

“Even more than her dwindling leads over GOP contenders is that while she is pretty much running against herself, in a very high profile book tour, she is losing ground. Her biggest problem I have always felt is the inevitability factor. It helped do her in in 2007-2008 and right now looks to be her major nemesis. She has this whole playing field to herself and is declining in the polls.”

Perhaps the biggest problem for Clinton, Zogby said, was that everyone already had an opinion of her: “Clinton has almost universal name recognition among likely voters and it is unlikely that she could say or do anything to increase her support base.” Meanwhile, potential opponents like Jeb Bush and Rand Paul are making gains.
