Google Chrome Extension Replaces 'Migrant,' 'Refugee' with 'Human'

“We wanted to make a statement."

A non-profit social ad agency based out of Australia and New York recently created an extension for the Google Chrome browser that automatically replaces all instances of the words "migrant," "refugee," "asylum seeker," and the like, with the word "human" in news stories from around the web.

The project, called "Rehumanize," was meant to add a human element back into the stories of those fleeing persecution and danger in their home country that have dominated the latest news cycle. From the website:

It’s in your newsfeed, it’s in the news. Too often those fleeing disaster and despair are called “queue jumpers,” “boat people,” or worse... “illegals.” It’s easy to lose sight of their humanity.

This simple Chrome extension replaces these words and brings in a little more dignity. Let's call them humans.

Quartz provided some examples of what the extension does:

The country has long been the most receptive in Europe to refugees.

The agency's executive director Murray Bunton told Quartz that it was expressions like "boat people" or "queue jumpers," often used in Australia, that were the real targets of this project more so than "migrant" or "refugee," terms that at least accurately describe what is happening. But to make the full point, all possible terms were thrown into the mix.

“We waned to make a statement,” Bunton said. "We have this notion in Australia that they are illegal. But we forget how much this country has been built by migrants, and refugees too. It’s very disappointing.”
