FSU Students: No Native American Headdresses at Seminoles Games

"...shall no longer be permitted into athletic arenas at FSU."

The Florida State University Student Government Association has passed a resolution "discouraging" students from wearing Native American headdresses to Seminole games:

The Student Government Association resolution, which passed April 20 by a 27-4 vote, is a nonbinding, formal opinion. It asks the university administration to consider adding the wearing of headdresses as a violation of the student code of conduct.

Under Resolution 15, “the wearing of any Native American headdresses shall no longer be permitted into athletic arenas at FSU.”

“I believe the intentions are genuine, and in the best interest in the Seminole Tribe of Florida, I have a great concern for the fact that this could impede on students' first amendment rights," said a former SGA official, who opted to remain anonymous. "There’s nothing in national or state legislation that restricts an individual's right to restrict clothing or material, and I believe there are certain consequences associated with the bill that could impede on student’s first amendment rights and could introduce trouble for the university itself.”

The headdresses worn at the games tend to resemble the Plains region tribes like the Sioux rather than the ones of the Seminole Tribe.
