DEBATE PRIMER: Will the VP Candidates Admit Government is the Problem, as Reagan Said?

Or will they just sling political mud?

Before Tuesday night’s debate between Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence and Democrat Tim Kaine, it seems appropriate to re-watch a famous clip of Ronald Reagan on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show from 1975.

In it, Reagan talks about the problem of big government and the fallacy of people looking to Washington D.C. to solve all their problems when in actuality, government IS the problem. Those words were as true then as they are now.

So, in preparation for tonight’s debate, consider what Reagan says in this clip and compare it to what you hear from the mouths of Pence and Kaine. Will either of them sound like Reagan or will this be another instance of political mudslinging?

Here's just one inspirational quote from the clip:

"First of all, the American people — if they would just take a little inventory and look around — you triple our troubles and we’re better off than any other people on earth. And we’ve asked so much of government and we’ve gotten into the habit over the last 40 years of thinking that the government has the answers. There’s very little that government can do as efficiently and as economically as the people can do themselves. And if government would shut the doors and sneak away for about three weeks, we’d never miss them.”
