One of the nation's most iconic celebrations of its independence is almost entirely dependent on imports from a global competitor.
The Fourth of July celebration in Washington DC features elaborate displays of fireworks exploding over the Washington Monument and other famous monuments. According to a Politico article published Friday, all of those impressive displays came from China:
The sparklers, bottle rockets and Roman candles you’ll be using this Fourth of July almost certainly came from there. So did the professional-grade pyrotechnics that’ll be launched above the Washington Monument on Friday night.
The vast majority of the country's fireworks come from China, and have since trade relations were reestablished in 1979. Retail sales of fireworks to individuals total $675 million annually.
