Since Colbert's faux persona represents a collective amalgam of conservative ideals, filtered through his liberal minded self-righteousness, then it's safe to say Colbert feels conservatives are greedy, ignorant, racist, sexist, homophobic, genocidal, fascists with below 70 IQ's.
If Colbert and his lead-in cohort, Jon Stewart, only had the courage to point their high-powered perception at people in their own backyard, they'd have to face the haunting reality of having helped advance the cause of some very mean-spirited ideologies.
Just yesterday, stories broke of lefty hero Dan Savage stating "Abortion should be mandatory" for population control and Senatorial candidate John Bohlinger (D-MT) comparing tea partiers with the Taliban, not to mention Barack Obama's deeply insincere apology on MSNBC for having lied to the country. Yet, the only fish on Mr. Colbert's chopping block is conservative opposition to ENDA -- the Senate bill prohibiting employers from hiring based on gender identity and sexual orientation. Colbert, donning his conservative avatar, had this to say:
Did you hear that? Workplace protection for the LGBT community. They want to make it illegal for an employer to discriminate against lesbians, gays...uh...Batman? And....I know this one, tartar sauce. Now, luckily this 'ENDA' Bill applies only to companies with 15 or more employees so you're safe for now -- '14 Bigots Moving and Storage'.
The audience then chuckled as a superimposed graphic displaying a truck labeled "14 Bigots Moving and Storage" flashed on the screen. Colbert then took shots at the religious right who've been the most vocal opponents of the law.
Now folks, it is a nightmare as the Family Research Council counsels -- 'ENDA would force religious business owners and workplaces such as Christian book stores to accept as normal transvestite and drag queens' -- Oh yeah! It is well-known that 'Bette Diddler' over here is just doing those Cabaret acts until she lands her dream job of selling figurines of Jesus teaching baseball.
Predictably, the audience howled. Lastly, he mocked the typical fears conservative and religious people have towards laws like this and gay marriage.
Today it is transgender. Tomorrow, the government will tell me I can't fire a mermaid. I'm sorry, excuse me, a 'hermafrotrout'...That is why before ENDA takes effect I'm getting rid of everyone on my staff who doesn't share my personal sexual preferences, and not just the 'LGB-HDTV-LMNOP' crowd. Typical...
