This past week, anger and frustration have welled in Americans' hearts as notices continually arrive from their health providers, letting them in on the inconvenient truth that they will not be able to keep their health plan. Meanwhile, the President has now wasted a total of at least $130 million to fund a failed website he has no idea how to fix, and the employer mandate looms overhead for that fateful day it swings into full-effect a year from now.
Of course, while Americans continue to agonize over the healthcare law, Stephen Colbert has just the joke to cheer them up -- sexist male Republicans resisting women's healthcare. Colbert, donning his faux-conservative persona, had the following to say Monday night:
The true victim of this healthcare disaster are America's most vulnerable, the men. Men always get the short end, of the long end of the scope. You see folks up until now, health insurance in America has always struck a delicate balance. Women paid higher premiums then men, and in return men paid less. The system worked, but now folks, all that's changing.
After uproarious laughter from the audience, Colbert then cut and pasted random sound bites from Fox News pointing out discrepancies in the male/female egalitarian pay structure in the healthcare law. One being from Dr. Jane Hughes, an ophthalmologist and, ironically, a woman. She had this to say in defense of males:
Under the new law, they're including essential health benefits, and those essential health benefits include maternity, pediatric dental and vision, contraceptive services, and free birth-control pills. None of which a young man needs or wants.
Somehow that caused the audience to erupt in immense laughter. After a brief quip about men not having to give childbirth, Colbert then took a cheap shot at John Stossel over a clearly sarcastic remark he made on Fox and Friends.
You ought to be able to charge people who use the services more...Women go to the doctor much more often than men. Maybe they're smarter or maybe they're hypochondriacs, they live longer, who knows.
Colbert's self-righteous puppet audience then let out a nice big groan once the clip cut out. Colbert said the following in response:
Yeah ladies, come on. Ladies love going to the doctor. Who knows why. Maybe they're pretending they're extras on "Grey's Anatomy". I don't know. They're suckers for that stuff.
Real big, Stephen.
