A customer accused of stiffing a black waitress a tip and writing a racist note on a receipt last month is claiming the incident an elaborate hoax.

Daniel Hebda dined at Anita’s New Mexico Cafe in Ashburn, Virginia in January and received a bill of $30.52. However, he was not pleased with his server, Kelly Carter, and only gave one penny as a tip and wrote “terrible service” on the receipt. But that’s not the receipt that was posted online and catapulted this story to viral status.

Carter said Hebda left her no tip and wrote, “great service, don’t tip black people” on the receipt.

The picture above shot Carter straight to the top of the sympathy list with leftist outlets posting about yet another example of bigotry in Trump’s America. This turned out well for Carter, too, as she gained the support of the local NAACP chapter and Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring, turning those moments into photo ops. All of this attention spurred one local man to start a fundraiser in Carter’s name which raked in $3,600 in donations for the slighted waitress. Her boss said random people were showing up to the restaurant and dropping off cash to show their support.

But Hebda’s attorney says his client wrote no such message and has “no ill feelings towards African Americans.” There’s also evidence that the receipt was printed hours after the cafe closed and the receipt in the viral photo contains markings that prove it is a reprint of an original receipt, reports The Daily Caller. The owner of the restaurant was contacted by the accused customer who demanded “that they set the story straight and find out who is responsible.”

At this point in the case, no one is sure what will come of the donations Carter received when this is all said and done.

But no matter what, the Loudon County NAACP is standing behind the waitress.

“It’s sad any way it goes,” said NAACP chapter president Philip Thompson.
