Al Gore, the global warming alarmist whose carbon footprint is as big as his bank account, has a new prediction to coincide, conveniently, with the release of his new film An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power: global warming will cause millions upon millions of refugees to spill out of the Middle East and North Africa if President Trump continues his “daily assault on reality, climate, and democracy.”
That’s according to an interview Gore just did with ThinkProgress, who asked the world-traveling former vice president about the potential of tens of millions of refugees being displaced because of drought and other weather phenomenon. Gore said it could even be more:
“The Max Planck Institute and others are now saying that some significant regions of the Middle East and North Africa may become uninhabitable because of the rise in both the temperature and humidity. And that will increase the flows of refugees. Africa by mid-century will have more people than either China or India, and by the end of the century more people than India and China combined. And subsistence agriculture is being hit harder than any other vital system in our civilization, because of the timing of the rainfalls, the concentration and timing of the big [extreme weather] events, and the problems of drought. Right now, the U.N. has warned of the worst humanitarian disaster since 1945: 20 million people on the verge of famine. So, we’re going to have to prepare for it, and that means insulating our structures of governance against the kind of disruption that we have seen in some European countries.”
Gore placed blame on global warming for bringing on the Brexit vote, recalling a pro-Brexit billboard that showed an endless line of refugees waiting to get into Europe.
“This is a major, major challenge,” Gore said. “Just as the next six or eight months are going to be particularly challenging for American democracy, the next several decades are going to be a test of the character and courage for humanity.”
Of course, it’s hard to believe another Gore prediction when so many others from his first foray into alarmism with An Inconvenient Truth failed to come true. No, major cities aren’t under water like he predicted in that film and yes, there are still polar ice caps and snowy mountains. Alas, the polar bear is still roaming on glaciers. But that’s not going to stop him from continuing to make movies, or store up all that cash in the name of saving the planet -- one private jet trip to climate summits at a time.
For now, Gore remains hopeful for the future, even though the United States is under “an absurdist president,” he said, who has allowed for the “rise of unreason.” Gore looks forward to a time when America will “once again lift up reason to its proper place in American discourse.”
ThinkProgress asked for advice from Gore for progressives who are in despair over President Trump. He told them, “We don’t have time for despair. We have work to do. Despair is just another form of denial.”
