Ben Affleck came unglued on Friday's Real Time with Bill Maher as the panel discussed radical Islam, resulting in a tense exchange between the actor, host, and guest Sam Harris.
Maher began by explaining the backlash he received from his previous show in which he called out liberal hypocrisy, but held strong this week in saying that liberals need to be consistent when standing on "liberal principles" -- especially amongst the "Muslim world."
In agreement, Harris jumped in saying, "liberals have failed on the topic of theocracy:"
Harris: They’ll criticize white theocracy, they’ll criticize Christians, they’ll still get agitated over the abortion clinic bombing that happen in 1984, but when you want to talk about the treatment of women and homosexuals and free thinkers and public intellectuals in the Muslim world, I would argue that liberals have failed us.
At this point, a testy Affleck jabbed "Thank God you're here!"
Harris continued:
Harris: The crucial point of confusion is that we have been sold -- this meme of Islamophobia where every criticism of the doctrine of Islam gets conflated with bigotry toward Muslims as people, that’s intellectually ridiculous.
Affleck, bursting at the seams, challenged Harris:
Affleck: So, hold on — are you the person who officially understands the codified doctrine of Islam? You're the interpreter of that?
This set off eight minutes of back and forth and talking over one another as Affleck fumed, accusing Harris and Maher of being "gross" and "racist," likening them to saying things like "shifty Jew" or disparaging blacks. Maher defended his and Harris's viewpoint of Islam as factual, but it was not enough to convince the actor.

One interesting point of note: around the 2:10 mark, Affleck struggled quoting the Declaration of Independence, stumbling over "Creator," in "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights," instead replacing it with "Forefathers." Affleck clearly demonstrates his loss of grip on reality.
