RANKIN: Pres. Obama's Feckless Foreign Policy

President Obama has weakened American strength and failed to uphold global security.

President Obama has failed to uphold his responsibilities and has fundamentally weakened the foundation for global security. The most recent polls have President Obama’s approval rating for foreign policy at 36%. There is no doubt that this is a pitifully low number, however, who are these 36%? Who could grant their approval of Mr. Obama while the United States and her interests abroad crumble before their eyes? Who could be confident in his unique brand of feckless uncertainty that alienates our closest allies and emboldens those who wish us harm? The world currently faces overwhelming problems, and is looking to the United States and Mr. Obama to act. They are met with silence. President Obama, and the 36% of the American people, are held captive by their liberalism and fail to recognize the true source of global security: American power.

For better or for worse, the world has relied upon U.S. economic and military supremacy since the close of the Cold War. It is principally due to the strategic military guarantees of the United States that the liberal institutions that Mr. Obama extols have been allowed to flourish. The United Nations was created on the back of the victory secured by the United States in the Second World War. ASEAN can conduct policy without fear of China solely because of U.S. naval supremacy in east Asia. The European Union functions thanks to the reconstruction of Europe by the United States, and because of the American military guarantees over the continent. Mr. Obama’s precious liberalism exists in the western world because of the U.S. military.

Today, it seems as if the world is fracturing. We face a protracted effort in Afghanistan, Russian encroachments in Ukraine, an emboldened China in the South China Sea, icy relations with our historic allies, and the black hole of the Syrian civil war that has given rise to groups like ISIS that exist as scourges on humanity. By largely ignoring these, and other, international concerns, President Obama is sending the message abroad that the U.S. is faltering from its historic role. President Obama has vigorously shaken the etch-a-sketch of the world and is allowing it to be redrawn by our adversaries.

As much as Mr. Obama wishes to ignore this fact, we are the only remaining superpower. We have a moral obligation to use this power for good and to ensure the survival of freedom at home and abroad. It seems as if Mr. Obama is embarrassed of our exceptionalism and wants to trade it away, and 36% of Americans agree with him. The rest of us are embarrassed of him. Many Democrats, like Hillary Clinton, join in this criticism, suggesting that President Obama lacks “organizing principles” in his foreign policy.

There is little doubt that Mr. Obama’s inexperience in foreign policy and irrational idealism have greatly harmed the United States. With more than two years remaining in his presidency, there is no telling how much more damage President Obama will do to our image and strength abroad.
