If you’re a fashion designer holding a summer garden party to show off your latest collection, you’ll want to make sure to have certain items on hand. White wine, floral tablecloths, maybe some dainty appetizers. But when the designer in question is Stella McCartney, that list apparently includes murderous dictators and Communist revolutionaries responsible for executing thousands of political prisoners.
The New York Post’s Page Six reports:
Miranda Kerr, Liv Tyler and fellow beauties Cara Delevingne, Amber Valletta and Dree Hemingway were spotted heading to a Stella McCartney garden party on Monday, where the designer showed off her latest resort collection.
Continuing the fashion world’s current obsession with Cuba, actors dressed as Che Guevara and Fidel Castro circulated — among Alicia Keys, Maggie Gyllenhaal, St. Vincent, Alan Cumming and his mom, artist Marilyn Minter and Tavi Gevinson — playing dominoes, swilling rum and chomping prop cigars.
The attending celebrities apparently thought the “Cuba-themed” event was cute. Actor Alan Cumming tweeted a photo of himself with “Che” alongside the caption “What better to do on my day off than hang out at lovely @StellaMcCartney 's presentation with Che Guevara and my mum?”
Actress Liv Tyler, daughter of Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, tweeted a photo of her face inside what appears to be a large wooden caricature of a figure in a sombrero smoking a cigar. Her comment: “misslivalittleStella's garden party's are always the best !!!! Last night So much fun.”
While nibbling on snow cones with mass murderers may not faze fashion’s elite, the reaction outside of the celebrity echo chamber was less kind.
Page Six reports that “the faux revolutionaries received some social-media backlash, with comments like, ‘So gross. Brush up on your history,’ and ‘Horribly insulting!’”
