During his Saturday Night Live opening monologue, comedian Chris Rock tackled a couple of subjects many feel are off limits in making light of -- 9/11 and the Boston Marathon bombing. However, the audience was much more enthusiastic as he endorsed gun control.
Rock began by reminding the audience that Friday was Halloween and that the New York City Marathon will take place on Sunday. "What could go wrong there, right?" he asked. Then recalling the Boston Marathon, Rock continued:
Nah, it'll be all right! New York's gonna' be fine, just like Boston's fine after the marathon. That Boston Marathon was scary, man... That was probably the most frightening, sadistic terrorist attack ever. Just think about it: 26 miles... 26 miles is a long drive... People jogging for 26 miles -- their knees are hurting, their feet are killing them…You’ve been training for a year, you finally get to the finish line, and somebody screams, ‘Run!’ That is horrible, man. But hey, the good people of Boston bounced back.
Now onto the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Rock explained how New York City bounced back, but called the building of another skyscraper in the same spot as the Twin Towers "arrogant:"
Have you seen the Freedom Tower? You can see it no matter where you at. They should change the name from the Freedom Tower to the ‘Never Going in There Tower' because I’m never going in there. There is no circumstance that will ever get me in that building. Are you kidding me? Does this building duck? What are they thinking? Who’s the corporate sponsor, Target? Stop it! In the same spot? What kind of arrogant, Floyd Mayweather crap is this?…They better put some mandatory [businesses] in there -- stuff you can't get out of -- like the IRS, family court, DMV…I am never going in the Freedom Tower. Hey, I got robbed on 48th and 8th about 20 years ago. I have not been back to 48th and 8th. I am never going in the Freedom Tower. I don’t care if Scarlett Johansson is butt naked on the 89th floor in a plate of ribs. I'm not going in there.
Rock assures that he is not joking about 9/11, but the commercialization of everything in America. "You gotta realize," he said, "we are in America, and in America there are no sacred days because we commercialize everything.” He predicts that in five years, there will be 9/11 sales. "Come on down to Red Lobster, these shrimp are 9 dollars and 11 cents!" Rock joked.
But it wouldn't be a complete SNL moment without a knock on gun owners in America. Rock recalled a time when he attended an anti-gun rally at the White House after which he received a tremendous amount of backlash:
I'm not big 'anti-gun,' but I just think there should be some regulations just in case. Like the same way I can't drive a NASCAR down the street, I shouldn't be able to have a machine gun in my house across the street from a school. Okay? It's simple, right?
Rock said he received death threats to his website after his appearance at the anti-gun event from people who felt he was getting between them and their weapon. Rock joked that he realized, "Oh my God! I need a gun!"
Finishing his monologue, Rock declared that he was never again going to associate with a cause or charity saying:
You on your own! I don't care what disease it is, I don't care if it's protecting kids, the environment -- I don't care! If you see me talking about a disease, I got it!
