A town in Upstate New York is taking a stand against political correctness after a special interest group took umbrage with the wording on a recently unveiled 9/11 memorial plaque. 

The town of Owego constructed a 9/11 memorial, in part from pieces of the subway rail that once ran underneath the World Trade Center, and an accompanying plaque. 

The memorial plaque reads that "Islamic terrorists" carried out the 9/11 attack. Now, the Islamic Organization of the Southern Tier is calling for the monument to be reworded. Local ABC affiliate KTRK reports: 

A group is taking issue with the words "Islamic terrorists" as they appear on the monument in Owego.

Donald Castellucci, town supervisor for the city of Owego, says he doesn't see it that way.

"I don't live in a politically-correct world" Castellucci says. "I live in a historical fact world and cross terrorism, whether it's American homegrown, Christianity, Islamic, you call it what it is."

Castellucci said his town "doesn't whitewash things," and maintains that the monument is accurate in describing the culprits of the 9/11 attack. 

The Islamic group, meanwhile, said the memorial should contain the word "terrorists" or simply "al Qaeda terrorists" instead, omitting the descriptor "Islamic."

So far there are no reported plans to change the wording on the monument, which will be permanently displayed after a dedication on the 15th anniversary of 9/11 this month. 

Perhaps Islamic advocacy groups around the country would be better served to fight the radical elements within their ranks rather than engage in efforts to bury painful truths about the faith and those who commit murder in its name.
