Liberty University, under the leadership of President Jerry Falwell Jr., is bringing an end to a rule that prohibits guns from campus residence halls in an effort to increase the security of its students.

“I take very seriously my responsibility to keep you safe in an increasingly dangerous world,” Falwell said Wednesday morning to thousands of gathered students who applauded wildly at the news. Reports say he was carrying a small pistol in his back pocket as he addressed the crowd.

In the wake of campus violence and Islamic terrorism on U.S. soil, Falwell has been urging qualified students to take advantage of the free concealed-carry classes offered at the school. 

"I've always thought, if more good people had concealed-carry permits then we could end those Muslims before they walked in killing," Falwell said on Friday. "Let's teach them a lesson if they ever show up here."

Since 2011, students who have concealed permits have been allowed to carry on campus. But up until now, they were still banned from the dorms. Falwell listened to his students who were complaining that their weapons were too far away, because of them being stored in their cars instead of in their rooms. 

"So we're making that change at your request," Falwell assured and said the board will lift the ban in a few days.

There are currently 950 people at Liberty who have concealed-carry permits and hundreds more have signed up for the training class. It is available for students 21 and older, per Virginia law.
