It Begins: Michael Moore Calls for Conversion of Obamacare to Single-Payer

For years, conservatives have argued that Obamacare was designed to be unsuccessful - that is to say, it was designed not so much to succeed on its own, but to create an environment conducive to the passing of a true government-run, single-payer healthcare system.

Wednesday, Michael Moore kicked off the new year by saying they were right. Literally.

The Affordable Care Act is a pro-insurance-industry plan implemented by a president who knew in his heart that a single-payer, Medicare-for-all model was the true way to go. When right-wing critics “expose” the fact that President Obama endorsed a single-payer system before 2004, they’re actually telling the truth.

Moore's New York Times op-ed, "The Obamacare We Deserve," opens with an admission that liberals have always known the president's signature legislation was a disaster.

Obamacare is awful. That is the dirty little secret many liberals have avoided saying out loud for fear of aiding the president’s enemies, at a time when the ideal of universal health care needed all the support it could get.

It continues by calling the plan, which was opposed by 100% of congressional Republicans, a Republican construction.

What we now call Obamacare was conceived at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, and birthed in Massachusetts by Mitt Romney, then the governor.

After admitting that the Affordable Care Act is anything but affordable, he makes his true pitch - that the people continue to strive for a public option as a gateway to single-payer, government run health care. He points to a proposal in Vermont for a state run single-payer program and encourages the grassroots to "look up the bus schedule to Montpelier."

It's up to the rank-and-file, Moore argues, because the president is not capable of fixing the problem.

So let’s get started. Obamacare can’t be fixed by its namesake. It’s up to us to make it happen.

And on that, conservatives and liberals certainly agree.
