The latest opinion on the Eric Garner case has come from an unexpected place: former President George W. Bush.

The former commander-in-chief gave an interview with CNN's Candy Crowley set to air on Sunday. To keep the conversation on Garner red-hot, the network has released a short clip where Bush expressed confusion and sorrow over the grand jury's decision.

“The verdict was hard to understand,” Bush said. “I haven’t seen all the details, but it’s sad that race continues to play such an emotional, divisive part of life.”

Bush then reflected upon his memories of the 1970's when there were race riots and expressed belief that race relations have improved, though not where they should be.

"I do think we've improved," Bush continued. "I had dinner with [Condoleezza Rice] the other night about this subject and, yeah, she just said 'You gotta understand that there are a lot of black folks around that are just incredibly more distrusting of law enforcement, which is a shame, because law enforcement's job is to protect everybody.'"
