Jesus is returning to Broadway, or at least his message of spiritual redemption is. After scoring big in Chicago, the faith-based musical Amazing Grace, which tells the redemptive story of the conversion of a slave trader to a Christian abolitionist who wrote the world's most famous hymn, is making its way to the biggest stage this summer.

The musical's website describes it as a "captivating tale of romance, rebellion and redemption" that follows a man "whose incredible journey ignited a historic wave of change." That man is John Newton (played by Tony Award nominee Josh Young), who finds himself torn between his slave trader father's footsteps and his childhood sweatheart's compassion for the slaves suffering under his watch. "But when a perilous voyage on the high seas finds John in his darkest hour, a transformative moment of self-reckoning inspires a blazing anthem of hope that will finally guide him home." Newton's spiritual transformation stirs him to write the beloved hymn and begin the abolitionist movement.

Variety's pre-release review back in October praised the musical for its ambitious scale, redemptive message, "expert pacing," "superb, intense performances," and "theatrical flair," but had questions about the strength of its "workmanlike score." As the announcement of its summer debut makes clear, the musical's strong commercial success answered any questions about its Broadway worthiness.

Josh Young, a Tony nominee for the 2012 revival of Jesus Christ Superstar, heads the cast as the son of a British slave trader, torn between loyalty to his father and the more humanistic views of his childhood sweetheart.

The 33-member cast also includes Erin Mackey, Chuck Cooper, Chris Hoch, Stanley Bahorek, Harriet D. Foy, Laiona Michelle, Rachael Ferrera and Elizabeth Ward Land. Choreography is by Christopher Gattelli, a Tony winner forNewsies, represented this season via his work on the Broadway revival of The King and I.

Lead producers on Amazing Grace are Broadway newcomers Carolyn Rossi Copeland and Alexander Rankin.
