Billy Crystal: Homosexuality Pushed On TV 'Too Much For Me'

"I just hope people don’t abuse it and shove it in our face."

Film and television actor Billy Crystal spoke before an audience at the Television Critics Association and said he feels homosexual scenes portrayed on TV are pushed too far onto viewers these days.

“Sometimes I think, ‘Ah that’s too much for me,'" Crystal said. He added, "Sometimes, it’s just pushing it a little too far for my taste and I’m not going to reveal to you which ones they are."

Crystal is known for his many comedic roles on the big screen as well as those on the small. In the late 1970s, Crystal played an openly gay character on the TV series Soap, Jodie Dallas.

Crystal recalled the time he played that controversial role during a completely different era but let it be known that even though more and more people accept that lifestyle today, those creating the content could perhaps refrain from "shov[ing] it in our face:"

I did it in front of a live audience and there were times where I would say to [the actor who played his boyfriend], 'Bob, “I love you," and the audience would laugh nervously, because, you know, it’s a long time ago -- that I’d feel this anger. I wanted to stop the tape and go, 'What is your problem?' Because it made you sort of very self-conscious about what we were trying to do then. And now it’s just, I see it and I just hope people don’t abuse it and shove it in our face -- well, that sounds terrible -- to the point of it just feels like an everyday kind of thing.

As expected, social media erupted over these comments; Crystal began taking heat from the LGBT community and supporters who have now taken to calling the actor a "subtle bigot" and even an "utter homophobic tool." Some complained that "hetero scenes have been 'Pushing It' for decades!"

Crystal is out and about promoting his new series to debut on FX called The Comedians.
