CNN's Christiane Amanpour, one of the news media's most open apologists for Islam, declared during live coverage of the Pope's visit late last week that top Republican presidential candidates "have decided to make a war on Moslems," reports Newsbusters.

Amanpour wasn't specific, but it's very likely that she is referring to Ben Carson, who recently dared to state that he would not support a devout Muslim for President, and Donald Trump, whose comments on Mexican illegal immigration have become the focus of both his supporters and detractors. She may also have been referring to Ted Cruz, who has taken a strong stance against radical Islam, although he is not currently top-ranked among the candidates.

Referring to the Pope, Amanpour told CNN's Jake Tapper:

"You know what, Jake? I was wondering whether anybody here sort of twigged that he chose Thomas Merton, a Cistercian friar who had tolerance and interreligious dialogue as his leitmotif. And in that Congress was one of the Republican candidates for presidency – there are two. The top Republican candidates have decided to make a war on Moslems – you know, 1.5 billion members of another faith. And it must be a little bit weird to have that sort of discordance when – you know, when – when this pope is here talking about what makes America great – tolerance and – and all the other issues that have made this country great – and the power of immigrants and other religions to build this country."

First, her suggestion that "tolerance" and "other religions" - by which she means Islam, of course - have made America great is typical leftist rewriting of history. Freedom, not tolerance, is what has made America great. And Islam has played absolutely no part in building this country - but it is playing a part now in tearing it down.

Second, the top Republican presidential candidates have not decided to "make a war" on 1.5 billion Muslims, which is an absurd accusation but par for the course for activist "journalists" like Amanpour, who is the anti-Oriana Fallaci. But at least a couple of those candidates are unafraid to acknowledge publicly that many Muslims have decided to make war on us - and that's an important start fighting back.
