Al Sharpton has told The Associated Press that on Monday or Tuesday he will be meeting with the family of 18-year-old Michael Brown who was shot and killed Saturday by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
Sharpton calls the killing of this unarmed black man "very disturbing" and cautions Ferguson citizens to not react in violence. Sharpton is also calling for a "fair investigation."
Police are still investigating what happened Saturday afternoon near the predominantly black St. Louis-area neighborhood. According to the initial report, a cruiser approached Brown and a friend as they walked down the middle of the street to his grandmother's house. After the officer told them to walk on the sidewalk, a verbal confrontation began and the officer attempted to place brown in the vehicle. A struggle ensued and the officer said Brown went for his service pistol. A shot was fired inside the cruiser, but no one was hit.
Brown ran from the officer after the shot was fired and the officer shot multiple times, killing Brown about 35 feet from the police vehicle. Witnesses say that Brown had his hands up and was trying to surrender before the fatal shots were fired. The unnamed friend was not injured and is not being charged.
Peaceful protests began that day but by the end of the weekend, Sharpton's pleas was ignored as violence and looting engulfed the area. A convenient store was looted and burned. A Wal-Mart was ransacked and SWAT teams moved in. A rims and tires shop was also looted.
The officer who shot Brown has been put on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
Brown's parents were involved in the peaceful demonstrations. The father held a sign that read: "Police have executed my unarmed son" Brown's mother said, "Police not telling us nothing, cause they have nothing to say."
The family has hired lawyer Benjamin Crump who represented the family of Trayvon Martin.
