College Republicans at UC-Berkeley held a candlelight vigil for Kate Steinle last week as a show of support for the slain woman and to show dissatisfaction that a criminal illegal alien was acquitted of her murder. However, the gathering caused some leftist students to do what they do best: protest and destroy.
According to The Washington Examiner, while these Republican students were quietly gathered on campus to honor Steinle's memory, others stood nearby and chanted their disapproval. External vice president of the GOP group, Naweed Tahmas, said, “They were shouting during my remarks, and throughout the vigil. Before, during and after.”
A large poster of Steinle was displayed at the top of the steps of a building on campus, surrounded by candles and flowers that spelled out “Kate.” By the next morning, the poster was ripped down and thrown into a trash can. Images of the vandalism were posted to Facebook by the Republican group:
“When illegal immigration policies kill Americans, we are told that we must remain silent,” Tahmas said during the vigil. “The media lectures us on how we are politicizing a death. The media and our politicians want to erase Kate’s name and story from history. It’s on us to speak the name of America’s lost daughter: Kate Steinle.”
Tahmas hoped the vigil would remain untouched so that other students could see it the next morning. But for the perpetually offended, the victim of a murder can’t be honored if conservatives support it.
