Republican Candidate Gets Thrown Out of Media Interview

"Okay, you may leave now. Go ahead. You're done here."

Mark Callahan, a Republican U.S. Senate hopeful in Oregon, was thrown out of a candidate endorsement interview conducted by Portland publication Willamette Week after calling out the disrespectful reporters as "thin-skinned liberals" -- and it was all captured on video.

Several GOP candidates were present for the paper to choose who it would endorse in the upcoming primary. Joe Rae Perkins attended via telephone. About an hour into the meeting, Perkins was giving a lengthy answer on speakerphone when Callahan noticed reporter Nigel Jaquiss writing "blah blah blah blah blah" on his notepad. Callahan called out this blatant disrespect and defended his opponent Perkins saying, "Joe Rae is a respectable woman. Why are you not respecting her?"

The interview fell apart as questions about global warming and the Easter bunny boiled things over.

Here is a transcript:

Perkins: [unintelligible through speakerphone]

Jaquiss: Thank you.

Callahan: You want to talk about disrespect? I see what you’re writing down there. You just wrote down ‘blah blah blah blah blah’ for everything that Joe Rae said. Joe Rae is a respectable woman. Why are you not respecting her by writing ‘blah blah blah blah blah’ on your notepad?

Reporter 2: Mark, we're going to move on. I'm going to ask a question, and if you answer respectfully, we might be willing to endorse you.

Callahan: You have to give respect in order to get respect. Right now, on that side of the table, you’re not giving very much respect to the five of us and our time here.

Reporter 2: Do you realize how much time you're wasting by doing this?

Callahan: I just see what your colleague here is putting down on his notepad -- he put down 'blah blah blah blah blah' when Joe Rae was giving a very detailed and descriptive answer.

Reporter 2: Mark, here's my question -- climate change -- do you believe it's a myth or a reality?

Callahan: It's a myth.

Reporter 2: It is.

Callahan: Yes.

Reporter 2: Okay.

Jaquiss: Where are you on the Easter bunny?

Callahan: What's that?

Jaquiss: I said, where are you on the Easter bunny?

Callahan: Are these really the questions I was called here to answer? [unintelligible] Really?! I called you out for putting ‘blah blah blah blah blah’ on your notepad and now you’re asking me questions like this? Really? Really?! Are we talking about this now?

Reporter 2: Let's move on.

Callahan: Okay, how about you ask a very serious and respectful question instead of asking a little childish question.

Reporter 2: Mark, I just asked you if climate change was a myth...

Callahan: And I answered your question.

Reporter 2: …so when I now move on and get the response from someone else and if you're not going to let me, I'm going to ask you to leave. Okay? That's two strikes.

Callahan: [laughs] Who do you think you are?

Reporter 2: Okay, you may leave now. Go ahead. You're done here. This is neither a fair or balanced meeting. This is a meeting for us to…

Callahan: I know it's a meeting being asked by disrespectful, thin-skinned liberals like yourself.

Reporter 3: There's the door.

Callahan: [get's up and walks out] I've got better things to do with my time.

Reporter 2: You clearly do.

Oregon Live says Willamette Week endorsed another candidate. Clearly.

Willamette Week came to their own defense over their self-proclaimed "BlahBlahBlahGate" saying Perkins "was supposed to be talking about health care" but "was instead talking about eliminating the U.S. Forest Service." They were happy to show Callahan the door.
