Reince Priebus Finally Deems Cruz Eligible for Office

Better late than never? Or too little, too late?

Chairman of the RNC Reince Priebus told Jake Tapper today that Senator Ted Cruz is eligible to hold the office of President. Previously, Priebus had failed to confirm this when asked directly.

In an interview published on Monday, Priebus was asked about Cruz's eligibility and was less than 100% on board:

TIME: A topic in the news today: Ted Cruz was born in Canada. Is he constitutionally eligible to be President?

PRIEBUS: Listen, I don’t get involved. I’m not going to get in the middle of all these candidate issues. It’s a bad place for me to be. I’ll let all these folks argue about this stuff, and I’m going to stay out of it.

This could easily be interpreted as giving some degree of cover to the birthers, and indeed it was. Even DNC chair Wasserman-Schultz had a better answer.

Ahead of tonight's debate, Priebus is finally admitting the fact that Ted Cruz is indeed an American citizen. Better late than never? Or too little, too late? Either way, it's typical of the antipathy the party establishment has for Ted Cruz.
