NYC's Ex-Lesbian First Lady Agrees with Papa Phil: Sexual Behavior is a Choice

Papa Phil Robertson, the patriarch of the Duck Dynasty, is currently on suspension from A&E fro suggesting that homosexual behavior is a sin.

Fundamental to the belief that a person should not engage in homosexual behavior is the belief that people have a choice about their sexuality in the first place - a position that gay activism organizations firmly reject.

In fact, the GLAAD website goes so far as to call the term "sexual preference" offensive because it suggest sexuality is a choice.

But Papa Phil's position is getting some new, if unintended, intellectual support from an unlikely source.

Chirlane McCray, wife of NYC Mayor Elect Bill de Blasio, has come out of the closet. Again.

In 1979, McCray penned a groundbreaking article for Essence Magazine titled, "I Am a Lesbian." In it, McCray revealed herself as gay. Why?

Because in 1979, I thought it important to dispel the myth that there are no gay Black people, that Black people just didn't do that sort of thing. That article was my way of telling Black women across the country, "You are not alone."

But a lot can happen in 35 years, and for the last 19, McCray has been the wife of de Blasio and mother of his now teenaged children.

The easy reaction might be to assume that McCray is bisexual, but that is a label she fiercely rejects.

I am more than just a label. Why are people so driven to labeling where we fall on the sexual spectrum? Labels put people in boxes, and those boxes are shaped like coffins. Finding the right person can be so hard that often, when a person finally finds someone she or he is comfortable with, she or he just makes it work. As my friend Vanessa says, "It's not whom you love; it's that you love."

So, how did she make the transition from openly gay activist to traditional wife and mother?

By putting aside the assumptions I had about the form and package my love would come in. By letting myself be as free as I felt when I went natural.

Of course, the idea that human sexuality is something that can be chosen based on "putting aside assumptions" is the very bedrock of Papa Phil's - and the Bible's - belief that it can therefore be a sinful choice. Religious thinkers have long argued that the fact that poly-sexuality is "natural" not only doesn't make it moral, but in fact is the reason that it might be deemed immoral in the first place.

But don't expect outrage from GLAAD - whose own website deems McCray's speech offensive, or from the mainstream press - who routinely blast religious conservatives for suggesting what McCray has just affirmed for her own life. Why? Because, in the end, the left is not concerned with apostasy on among its own on principal, as long as it has conformity on policy. As gay activist Dan Savage quipped to TruthRevolt's Ben Shapiro while defending Alec Baldwin's "c*ck s*cking f*ggot" slur:
