Leftists of all stripes just can't keep their hands off the Virgin Mary this Christmas. They've questioned her virginity, said she offends rape victims, and now insulted her holy image by putting a burqa on a Nativity scene.
A parish priest in the south of Italy enraged parishioners by dressing the Virgin Mary in a Muslim burqa for his church’s Christmas Nativity scene, adding a boatful of refugees and a rainbow flag in place of the star of Bethlehem.
The pastor of the parish of Saints Joachim and Anne in Potenza, Father Franco Corbo, found himself face to face with an angry mob of demonstrators gathered outside his church on Wednesday to protest his provocative display.
The 75-year-old priest, known as "Don Franco," pinned the burqa on the mother of Christ "in the name of dialogue among religions" and has said his critics "misinterpreted" his intentions. He also didn't consider the gesture sacrilegious, but a symbol that "religion can and should be an instrument of dialogue."
"Islam is synonymous with peace and brotherhood," he said, calling terrorism "an aberration that has nothing to do with religion" while accusing his critics of "narrow-mindedness and a form of fundamentalism."
Don Franco should tell that to the thousands of Christians that were slaughtered in both the middle-east and North Africa as Islam violently swept into those countries throughout the early centuries of the Middle Ages, not to mention the current genocide of Christians taking place in the Middle East.
The priest also presented Joseph as a North African Muslim. Shepherds in the scene were dressed in Muslim garb as well.
After various protests, Don Franco eventually removed the scene and replaced it with more traditional figures.
