Grammys to Feature On-Air Gay Marriages

Producers assure that they are serious and no gimmick.

As usual, there will be more than music performances to see on the Grammys Sunday night. A mass wedding ceremony of 34 gay and straight couples will be performed during the live performance of the 2013 marriage-equality anthem "Same Love" by hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

The producers are hoping for a "show-stopper" with this segment. They are also expecting controversy, something for which the Grammys have a reputation. But they insist it is no stunt and has nothing to do with sensationalist television:

We don’t need to stoop to the level of trying to find gimmicks and sensationalistic approaches to what we do.

Officiating the ceremonies will be Queen Latifah, and Madonna will sing with the group. Lewis, the group's producer, said of the weddings:

They will be in our minds the ultimate statement of equality, that all the couples are entitled to the same exact thing.
